How important is accreditation?
Accreditation, when done well, is a means by which colleges ensure that other colleges meet appropriate academic standards. Accrediting agencies are supposed to help each college excel according to its own particular mission, and the Newman Guide colleges are more mission-centered than most. Accreditation usually means that a student can apply for U.S. federal student aid (even at certain foreign colleges), as long as the student’s college chooses to participate in federal aid programs. Many colleges and graduate programs will only accept transfer credits and recognize degrees from accredited colleges. All the colleges and programs in The Newman Guide are fully accredited or are at least approved as “candidates” for full accreditation. Candidacy status generally confers the benefits of full accreditation, but it is temporary and can be revoked if colleges do not meet high standards. Students should know a college’s accreditation status before enrolling. We recommend having a discussion about your goals and the implications of accreditation with an admissions counselor.
