Walsh University

Established in 1960 by the Brothers of Christian Instruction in North Canton, Ohio, Walsh University became an independent Catholic university in 2021. Especially in recent years, Walsh has also distinguished itself by a strong embrace of its Catholic identity.

Walsh offers more than 100 academic majors and minors in mostly career-oriented fields. Its general education curriculum is lighter than most other Newman Guide colleges, covering a little more than a third of credits required for graduation, but it provides a liberal arts foundation with at least two Catholic theology courses and one philosophy course. A service learning course is a requirement for all students. Only about half of Walsh’s students and half the professors are Catholic, but all theology professors have a mandatum from the local bishop.

The University has several priests who celebrate daily Mass, offer daily Confession times, and provide opportunities for Eucharistic adoration. Regrettably campus residences are not single-sex—the sexes are separated by wing or floor—and opposite-sex visitation is allowed in student rooms until late at night, with no open-door policy.

There is a wide variety of student clubs and other activities. Athletes compete in 21 varsity sports in the Great Midwest conference in NCAA Division II.

Since many of Walsh’s students aren’t Catholic, the University takes seriously its efforts to share the faith through courses and campus life. For a Catholic student—especially one in Ohio—looking for Catholic education and one of Walsh’s many majors at a relatively good price, it’s worth serious consideration.

What we really like:

Although Walsh University is a bit like “mission territory” with many non-Catholic students, it has been steadfast in its fidelity to Catholic teachings. In the last few years, the University has worked to strengthen Catholic identity and increase the portion of Catholics on the faculty.

All of the colleges recognized in The Newman Guide are serious about faithful Catholic formation and education, but they are quite different in many important respects. Explore their websites, talk to faculty and admissions counselors, and visit their campuses to determine which is right for you!
